New research suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
